Will my medical Insurance cover the services of a Registered Dietitian?

Most health plans cover services for Registered Dietitians with a referral from a doctor. You may require a doctor’s referral note for reimbursement. Check with your Medical Insurance Provider.

Do I need a Doctor’s referral note to book an appointment?

No you do not need a referral to book an appointment, but you may require a Doctor’s referral note for reimbursement by your Medical Insurance.

Why should I choose a Registered Dietitian over another Nutrition Professional? What is the difference?

All Registered Dietitians in Ontario are members of the College of Dietitians of Ontario. As a member of the College, a Registered Dietitian is required to practice in accordance to specific laws that protect the public, just like doctors or nurses. The law protects the title “Registered Dietitian” or “RD” for short. Specific educational and professional requirements must be met in order to legally practice as a Registered Dietitian.

On the other hand, the terms “nutritionist” or “registered nutritionist” are not protected terms in Ontario. Anybody can call himself or herself a nutritionist, and there are no legal standards for their quality of care.

To learn more consult the College of Dietitians of Ontario.

“I’ve also lost 30 lbs since Jan, almost all of it fat rather than muscle. I really like her sensible approach and lively personality. I think she’s sort of the queen bee of Ottawa dietitians too.”
